uSnap.Us - an experience of startup weekend
I’m not going to rehash a post I’ve already put up. So if you want to know my thoughts on startup weekend, which we won this past weekend, you can read my thoughts here http://blog.xero.com/2011/11/running-on-fumes-my-experience-of-the-inaugural-startup-weekend/ Instead, I thought I’d try and keep track of all the different articles we’re getting around the place: ...

WDCNZ - Live
Well it’s been a busy few weeks since we had the first inkling that WDCNZ would be a goer. Our response from speakers has been amazing (thanks to all of you who got back to me) and we’re looking at a stellar lineup. Dave Keyes has also done a fantastic job with the site design so head over to http://wdcnz.com for all the info you could possibly want!

WDCNZ
so a few weeks ago I sent out a tweet and was surprised by how quickly people got back saying they’d be keen. This was a Tuesday and by the Wednesday morning, during a regular team catch up with Xero our CEO said he’d support the idea and whoompf that gave a green light to the whole thing. Conception to go in less than 24 hours, I was thrilled, then scared… I felt like Wayne...

grounding
There’s nothing quite like being brought down to earth, here are some latest extracts from my Dad’s updates while he’s volunteering in Sierra Leone: Tiny little tribeswomen appear from way out in the jungle, we cannot communicate with 3 of them at the moment, no-one knows their language. Some are very upset and shy. There is one tribe where the woman is left on her own once she...

So 30 Days of blah is over, I’m now going to have to start thinking about what to fill in my blog with from here on in… I’ll try and keep away from memes for a while.
#30DaysOfMe Day 30: favorite song
I made it, 30 days, 30 updates later and I’m still here.So for the final day I’m supposed to pick my favorite song. Truth be told I don’t have anything resembling a favourite song or track or score. How could I pick when there’s so many nice tunes out there?I might have a temporary go to track (which at the moment seems to be Daft Punk’s Digital Love) but that’s...
#30DaysOfMe Day 29: What I've learned
So 30 days is nearly up, only tomorrows post yet to reveal.I’m not sure what I’ve learned in the last month though, it’s really flown by, Perhaps that more people read this blog than I thought? Perhaps that I can write regularly and keep to it for a semi-sustained period of time (note i didn’t spend 30 days writing I wrote a lot in advance) Perhaps that I need to start...
#30DaysOfMe Day 28: a year ago
A year ago this was me: so obviously the addition of Sophie to our family has been the one massive thing to happen this year on a personal front. I wouldn’t say I’m that much different, I perhaps have a new understanding of the lengths parents go to in the early years of child raising. Apart from that my roll hasn’t changed much, I’m still enjoying the same work so really...
#30DaysOfMe Day 27: Why do 30 days of me
As I laid out at the beginning I was missing regular blogging and writing. I’m still not sure where I go on from this, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be quite as personal as these posts have been. Hopefully everyone has been slightly enlightened by these posts and didn’t mind the inane babble at times.
Wellington .Net User Group tonight - Xaml, to the...
Xaml has become a powerful tool for building User Interfaces in WPF, Silverlight and now Windows Phone 7, but how can we leverage this Xaml Processing capabilities for ourselves to improve productivity, readability and maintainability? I will show you a few lesser known/used features of the Xaml Processor, and an Example of replacing plain old xml with fancy Xaml Objects.via dot.net.nz RSVPs to...
#30DaysOfMe Day 26: What I think of my friends
Odd question to be asked to write about, I don’t think it’s approprate to go into a person by person critique but generally speaking my friends are the people from my life who have fulfilled the following: they don’t need me to contact them every week/month. (Most of my friends I see and speak to very rarely, due to being on the other side of the world. I love how we can all...

#30DaysOfMe Day 25: What's in my bag
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words Apple MacBook Aluminium (2008, 4Gb RAM, 500GB Solid State Hybrid Hard Disk Drive) Kindle v3 External Hard drive (not used much any more but has some files on I refer to) headphones (i have to use loop over headphones as in ear ones just don’t stay in) Cables Cables Cables (IPhone and Kindle usb cables) Apple Remote and VGA...
Open for suggestions
I’ve been quite surprised how much I’ve enjoyed doing the 30 days of me challenge, not many days left (i’ve actually pre written most of the remaining days so I’ve cheated a little) I’m trying to think what I should do to keep writing… I’ll obviously go back to more technical topics but would like to keep some of the more personal entries flowing so...
#30DaysOfMe Day 24: A letter to my parents
Dear Mum and Dad, I miss you guys a lot. I remember being able to just hop on the phone and you’d be awake, now it’s all about clock watching and working out when you’re awake and likely to be close to a computer so we can skype and you can see Sophie. I’m sorry that we’re not closer but I had to move. The UK, while I feel honoured to have been brought up...
#30DaysOfMe Day 23: Craving
Most of the time I crave a bit of peace and quiet. I love to be able to find time to just sit and contemplate/read and find those times are just too few and far between.I’m at the point in my life where everything is moving along at such a rapid pace I just want it to slow down for a while.. I crave sleep a lot at the moment too for obvious reasons.
#30DaysOfMe Day 22: What makes me different
I’m a very different kind of character and I would sum my main points of difference as: Never holding a grudge, never really disliking anyone (I won’t go out of my way to be friendly to anyone but I’ve never hated anyone) Logical over emotional, I’m just more likely to make a logical choice than an emotional one Respectful: I’d like to think of myself as respectful of...
#30DaysOfMe Day 21: Happy
This is the thing that makes me happy (and sad, and sleep deprived)
#30DaysOfMe Day 20: Marrying
Hmm, not really a question for me as I’m happily married. One of the best things I ever did by the way.
#30DaysOfMe Day 19: Nicknames
Hmm, beyond cruel names that people have called me I don’t really know of many nicknames.. possibly:Toe-Thumbs: because of my clubbed thumbsMuffin Man: This one followed me through primary school as in the first school play i was the muffin man and had to ring a bell while singing “here I am the muffin man”. I hear I was cute back in the 80s My online handle tends to be...
#30DaysOfMe Day 18: Plans and Goals
I’ve already insinuated my plans and dreams but here’s more of an official run down:1) be self employed by 302) be running/helping run a successful company (success means hiring more than just me, as they say a company is either growing or shrinking, I’d like to grow) 3) be financially capable of returning to the UK every couple of years with my daugter4) to be happy O
